Richard "Dick" Creighton Newlands died July 9, 2010, of natural causes at the family beach house. He was born Jan. 12, 1928, to Helen and George Newlands in Portland. He attended Riverdale Elementary, Lincoln High School, Brentwood and Middlesex colleges, and gradu-ated from Yale University in 1950 with a degree in political science.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In 1952, he took over his father's insurance business which he helped grow into the partnership Campbell, Galt and Newlands (USI), Portland's leading insurance brokerage. Dick loved helping people through his work, and had a strong sense of civic duty. He supported numerous charities and served as president on the boards of the Riverdale School District, the Racquet Club, and Planned Parenthood. Throughout his life, Dick enjoyed sports and social clubs. He had a quick wit, a deep knowledge of history, a keen interest in world events, and read voraciously. He was an avid tennis player, and enjoyed golf and bridge. Dick will be missed by a large circle of lifelong friends.

He is survived by his wife, Sara "Sally" Voss Newlands; their children, Martha, Richard "Rich," and Donald of Portland, and George of Albuquerque, N.M.; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 15, 2010, in Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Remembrances are suggested to Outside In and Planned Parenthood.
