Joyce MacKenzie died July 13, 2010, after a yearlong battle with cancer. She was a faithful, loving wife, friend, and a devoted mom and grandmother. She was born in 1932 along with her identical twin, Janice, and raised on a farm outside Silverton. She attended Oregon State College (now Oregon State University) and Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University), graduating with a teaching degree. While in Corvallis, she met and later married John MacKenzie in 1955. Eventually settling in Eastmoreland to raise her own family, she taught junior high mathematics for 25 years at Meadow Park and Five Oaks middle schools in Beaverton. She also served as president of the Beaverton Education Association for one term. Seeing a gap in the curriculum, she co-wrote a personal finance textbook.

After retiring in 1990, she split her time between her new home in Lake Oswego and her beach house in Oceanside. Her passions included travel, opera, and knitting and baking for her grandchildren. As a master knitter she was involved in local guilds teaching her craft. She also served on the citizens review board (CRB) of Clackamas County, helping to protect children under state care.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1982; and earlier this year by her twin sister, Janice Noller. She is survived by her sister, Pauline Doerksen; daughter, Kim Mullen; and son Mark; as well as four grandchildren. She will be sorely missed.
